Week 1, Day 1
Week 1 Technique Summary
- Using the metronome and counting out loud, play both hands together exactly on the attack of the downbeat. Wait, without playing any more notes and counting the beats until the downbeat of the next measure and repeat the attack of the downbeat. If the downbeat has more notes within that beat (i.e., eighth or sixteenth notes), don’t play them. Just one attack per measure.
- Repeat step one, adding in one additional attack halfway (or partway) through the measure.
We are looking to prioritize visually picking out the downbeat, while also prioritizing accuracy of notes and a consistent pulse. Though our eyes are moving horizontally across the bar, we are only responsible for playing the vertical alignment of hands together once or twice per measure.
